Major Lazer Boosts Jamaica Bobsleigh with Olympic Support

February 17, 2026

Internationally acclaimed electronic dance music group Major Lazer has significantly bolstered Jamaica’s Winter Olympic campaign by making a substantial financial contribution to the national bobsleigh team. This timely support comes as the team embarks on its journey at the Winter Olympic Games in Milan, reflecting a blend of cultural pride and global influence.

The donation was made last Friday to the “Help Jamaica Bobsleigh Achieve Olympic Dreams” GoFundMe initiative, orchestrated by the United States-based North Country Sports Council (NCSC). Launched late last year, the fundraising campaign has gained substantial traction over the past month, with Major Lazer’s contribution standing as the largest single donation to date. This financial boost is instrumental as the team gears up for competition.

Jamaica’s bobsleigh program holds a storied place in sporting history. The team captured global attention with its remarkable debut at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary—an extraordinary achievement for a tropical nation with no natural ice. Their underdog journey was later immortalized in the beloved 1993 Disney film Cool Runnings, introducing audiences to the resilience and determination behind their sledding endeavors.

Now, almost four decades after that groundbreaking debut, the program continues to thrive on passion, innovation, and international goodwill to maintain competitiveness on the global stage. As bobsleigh events at the Winter Games commenced on Thursday with training sessions, anticipation builds towards the culmination on February 22, when athletes will strive for podium success.

Major Lazer’s involvement is not just a financial gesture but also a powerful symbol of cultural alignment. The group’s current lineup features American producer Diplo, Jamaican-American hype man Walshy Fire, Brazilian-born DJ Ape Drums, and new member America Foster, who is British-Jamaican. Walshy Fire, of Chinese-Jamaican heritage and raised in Florida, is also the younger brother of legendary West Indies fast bowler Courtney Walsh.

As the Jamaican sleds make their mark on the icy tracks of Milan, the support from Major Lazer underscores a rising solidarity from the global music scene. Jamaica’s Olympic aspirations continue to resonate far beyond its tropical shores, inspiring a diverse audience with the spirit of determination and unity.
